SONY BVU-950P – U-matic SP recorder

The SONY BVU-950P is a broadcast-grade U-matic SP recorder, engineered for superior video playback, editing, and digitisation. As part of SONY’s SP (Superior Performance) lineup, this machine supports both SP and high-band U-matic formats in PAL. Because of its reliability and performance, the BVU-950P is a staple in any serious tape migration project.

Refurbished to meet factory specs

At NextArchive, every BVU-950P undergoes a complete refurbishment process. First, we perform a deep cleaning – both inside and out- followed by a thorough inspection, we then:

  • Replace worn electronic components
  • Install a new pinch roller assembly
  • Fit new idler drive wheels and belts
  • Perform software updates
  • Lubricate and calibrate the mechanism
As a result, each unit meets—or sometimes exceeds—its original factory specifications. In addition, clients may choose between a standard unit with its existing drum or request installation of a replacement upper drum assembly, one of our key differentiators.

Technical highlights

  • Produced: 1993
  • Horizontal resolution: SP mode: 300 lines (color/monochrome), Hi-band mode: 260 lines
  • Dual reel motors for improved tape tension and speed control (the VO-9000 serie has one motor to wind/rewind the tape)
  • Dolby C noise reduction for SP tapes with automatic playback detection
  • Optional plug-in modules:
    • Time Base Corrector (TBC-6)
    • Time Code Generator/Reader (BKU-905)
    • Digital Noise Reduction (BKU-902)

Designed for demanding workflows

The BVU-950P was built for heavy use in professional and broadcast environments like newsrooms and editing suites. In the ‘old days’, it paired with BVU-900 or 920P units for linear editing workflows. Although it relies on analog technology, this machine continues to serve as a trusted solution for archives seeking reliable playback during the digitisation of U-matic  Hi-band and SP recorded material.
