The principle of the DAT cassette recorder is similar to that of a VCR: the tape within the cassette wraps around an angled rotating head for playback. DAT cassettes are among the most fragile and endangered audio media. The tape inside the cassette is exceptionally thin and moves very slowly. Studies have shown that digital signal loss can occur after more than three consecutive playbacks of a DAT cassette. Today, it may be necessary to perform multiple playbacks using different devices to ensure an error-free transfer of a DAT cassette.
