On-site digital archiving of a classified videotape collection
NextArchive recently completed a multi-phase project in Azerbaijan to preserve a large, classified collection of videotapes. This project, conducted for a Presidential Government organization located on secure military grounds, required the highest level of professionalism, security protocols, and confidentiality.
Phase 1: Initial assessment
The project began with a “Quick Scan” discovery phase. Our team assessed the videotapes on-site and discussed the client’s expectations, technical needs, quality requirements, and available resources. We concluded this phase with a detailed report that outlined recommendations for moving forward.
Phase 2: Defining and deploying the solution
Based on the initial findings, we proposed a comprehensive solution for video migration, including tape cleaning, repair, and digitization. The offer involved providing necessary equipment, ingest software, transcoding tools, quality control systems, training, and ongoing support. We also scheduled monthly visits from NextArchive experts to ensure the project’s success.
Phase 3: Implementation and completion
The equipment was prepared in our Amsterdam warehouse, airfreighted to Baku, and set up at the secure government facility guarded by military personnel. Our team trained the client’s production staff on-site, as NextArchive experts were not permitted to view the tapes due to their sensitive content. We also provided ongoing support with monthly visits and remote assistance, closely monitored by the IT department. After completing the project, the installation was disassembled, returned to Amsterdam, and re-stocked into our inventory.
This project highlights NextArchive’s ability to deliver tailored archival solutions while navigating complex security requirements. It also underscores our commitment to preserving cultural heritage, even under the most challenging conditions.
