Bosch Fernseh BCN-51
Broadcast 1-Inch Type-B open reel video recorder
Bosch Fernseh introduced the BCN-51 in 1976 as one of the first and most advanced SMPTE Type B video recorders. Engineered in Germany by Bosch Fernseh, this 1-inch open reel machine quickly set the standard for analog broadcast recording across continental Europe.
Broadcasters adopted the BCN-51 widely for its excellent picture quality, smooth tape transport, and consistent reliability. It played a major role in replacing bulky 2-inch Quadruplex systems, helping studios and mobile units transition to the more efficient 1-inch format.

The preferred choice for 1-inch B-format Archives
While Type C machines dominated in the U.S. and U.K., European broadcasters relied heavily on Type B—and the BCN-51 served as the backbone of that infrastructure. Today, this VTR remains a trusted tool for preserving analog 1-inch Type B videotape collections.
If you manage a large archive of B-format video reels, the Bosch BCN-51 from NextArchive delivers the reliability and playback quality required for archival-grade digitisation.
