From 2017 until 2019, NextArchive contributed to the preservation of UNESCO’s audiovisual archives by providing expertise and technical solutions for the digitization of U-matic videotapes and over 8000 hours of 1/4-inch audiotapes.
The project was carried out in two phases: on-site digitization at UNESCO’s Headquarter in Paris and off-site processing of audiotapes in the Netherlands. NextArchive played a critical subcontractor role, leasing its technical solutions to the service provider contracted by UNESCO.
On-site U-Matic digitization in Paris
The first phase of the project focused on digitizing a small but significant collection of U-matic videotapes at UNESCO headquarters. Recognizing that the contracted service provider did not own the specialized equipment required to execute the project, NextArchive was subcontracted to lease a comprehensive technical solution.
U-Matic setup
- After testing the U-matic migration system, it was transported to Paris, installed, and calibrated on-site.
- RTI VT-3100 tape cleaners were used to clean tapes, ensuring optimal playback conditions.
- Playback was achieved using Sony VO-9850P decks, complemented by the BVT-800PS TBC to ensure signal stability and fidelity.
Off-site Audiotape digitization in the Netherlands
Simultaneously, over 8000 hours of 1/4-inch audiotape were processed the Netherlands.
Audiotape setup
- The audiotapes were reproduced on Studer A807 decks, known for their precision and reliability.
- A 16 ingest line setup of Cube-Tec Quadriga Audio was employed for highest-quality audio capture.
- A DOBBIN post-processing system was used to ensure accurate digital outputs ready for archival storage.
Leased solutions and collaborative success
As the subcontractor, NextArchive’s ability to provide a complete leased solution was critical to the project’s success. The service provider contracted by UNESCO benefited from NextArchive’s full-service offering, which included:
- Tailored Technical Solutions: A ready-to-use setup, specifically designed and optimized for the project.
- Maintenance Support: Maintenance services ensured seamless operation throughout the project.
- Backup Equipment: Spare machines were included in the lease to eliminate the risk of downtime due to equipment failure.
This project highlights the importance of partnerships in heritage preservation. By leasing its expertise and solutions, NextArchive empowered the contracted vendor to fulfill UNESCO’s preservation goals, ensuring a seamless transition from analog to digital formats.
