SONY BVW-85P with PCM-85 Digital Audio Processor

The SONY BVW-85P with PCM-85 is a top-tier Betacam SP studio recorder/player. Designed for demanding broadcast and post-production environments, this machine combines analog video excellence with optional digital audio recording capabilities. When paired with the PCM-85 Digital Audio Processor, it delivers outstanding two-channel audio quality—making it a versatile tool for archival transfer and studio operations.

Digital audio recording

The BVW-85P supports both analog and digital audio. When used with the PCM-85 and metal particle tape, the unit records digital audio directly onto the tape using the video heads. This method ensures precise, high-fidelity sound capture with minimal noise or loss.

In PCM mode, the system records two channels of digital audio instead of the longitudinal Channel 1 (CH-1). These channels cannot be played back on standard Betacam SP VTRs. However, the BVW-85P still supports reverse compatibility: it can play back all tapes recorded on older Betacam and Betacam SP decks, regardless of audio format.

Flexible operation modes

With the audio mode switch set to LNG, the unit disables PCM and enables both longitudinal channels—matching the audio setup of the popular BVW-75P. This makes it ideal for projects requiring compatibility across a wide range of Betacam SP machines.

In PCM mode, high-quality digital audio replaces CH-1, providing a cleaner, more precise alternative for critical recordings.

Backward compatibility and tape support

The BVW-85P accepts both oxide and metal particle tapes. It maintains full playback support for legacy Betacam and Betacam SP recordings, even those without digital audio.
