NextArchive’s vision for a sustainable preservation infrastructure
It’s common knowledge that the world’s audiovisual (AV) heritage is at risk—not just because tapes degrade, but because the people who know how to repair the machines that play them are disappearing. With format obsolescence, service engineers may also become obsolete. At the core of AV digitization lies legacy equipment: U-matic decks, reel-to-reel recorders, Betacam recorders and other analog and digital workhorses that have long been out of production. They can’t be replaced. They must be maintained.
And the people who can do that? They’re retiring. Fast.
If you’re a Technician, an Institution, a retired Engineer, or highly skilled operator that believes in sustainable preservation, we invite you to be part of this network.
